Raigad Fort – The Capital of Shivaji Maharaj’s Swarajya

Historical Significance of Raigad Fort

Originally known as Rairi, the fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from the Adilshahi Sultanate in 1656. He renamed it Raigad, meaning "King’s Fort", and declared it the capital of his Swarajya (self-ruled kingdom).

  1. In 1674, Shivaji Maharaj was coronated as Chhatrapati at Raigad Fort.
  2. The fort housed his court, palace, treasury, and various military and administrative structures.
  3. After Shivaji’s death, his son Sambhaji was crowned here.

Raigad thus became the political and spiritual center of the Maratha Empire.
